The Sanctuary of Poseidon at Possidi is considered one of the oldest places dedicated to the god of the sea in Greece. Archeological evidence suggests that the site was used for religious activity from the 12th century BC and in the Geometric, Archaic and Hellenistic periods. The sanctuary was founded by the ancient Mende people and was one of the major maritime cult sites of the northern Aegean.
The archeological site has the basic remains of four major temple buildings, altars and ancillary buildings built in different historical periods. Excavations at the site have revealed inscribed pottery fragments, clay vessels and artifacts that shed light on ancient sacrificial rites and seafaring traditions. The marked paths of the excavation site allow for an educational stroll through the ancient Greek religious architecture, and the evolution of Kassandra.
The sanctuary is located on the west coast of the peninsula, right next to the road that goes to the Possidi Lighthouse. The site is situated approximately 15 km from Nea Skioni and about 20 minutes by car from Stella Meri Studios. Visitors can easily combine a visit to the temple ruins with a trip to the nearby beach and historic light house.
Distance from Stella Meri Studios: Approximately 20 minutes.
