The Tower of Saint Paul was built in 1407 on a high promontory overlooking the harbor of Nea Fokea, on the northeastern shore of Kassandra. This well preserved stone structure, which rises to a height of nearly 17m, was originally a defensive watchtower for the protection of the agricultural estate (metochi) of the Saint Paul Monastery of Mount Athos. It is one of the most famous Byzantine monuments in Halkidiki and offers extensive views across the sea.
Visitors can also descend into the underground passage leading to the Agiasma (Holy Water) of Saint Paul, a historic cave chapel carved out of the rock beneath the tower complex. The waterfront around the historic ruins also has a marina with local fishing boats and small yachts moored there. The harbor promenade is lined with traditional tavernas serving fresh seafood, making it a convenient place to combine historical sightseeing with a meal by the water.
It’s about 35km north of Nea Skioni and takes about 40 minutes by car from Stella Meri Studios. You can park at the bottom of the hill and walk up to the towers and down to the port quite easily. Its position near the entrance to the peninsula makes it a perfect stop-off while traveling around Kassandra.
Distance from Stella Meri Studios: Approximately a 40-minute drive.
